How Important Do You Think Exercise Is?

THE ELEVEN BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

&

THE RISK OF A PHYSICALLY INACTIVE LIFESTYLE

We were born to move unless early in life a significant impairment or injury occurs, we are born not only with the potential to move ourselves from one place to another but with an absolute determination to do so as soon as we develop the necessary strength and coordination. Analysis and discovery said that a toddler (kids below age 2) moves his joints 1500 times in a day this is equivalent to treking 0.3 kilometers.

Primitive man our ancestors have no business staying at a place, his daily business, his priority circles round-Gathering, harvesting, hunting food and finding fresh water to quench his taste and then he survives. For him those are the ultimate task. In a routine manner, everyday passes. But what?

Over the past hundred years, technological devices that are labour saving were invented, giving us a kind of life in history reserved for royalty of-course who doesn't like that strain free life? you?
Now very few people grow their own food, chop firewood, pump water out of the ground most of us have access to appliances that drastically reduce the amount of effort required to prepare food, clean dishes, and wash our clothes we now engage in a labour market full of division of labour, great! We prefer taking cab to treking or riding bicycle, we use auto pedal bikes in parts where our cars can not drive and we try to park as close to our destination as possible.

Climbing the stairs of a two storey building is now a second choice for us only when the elevator and escalator are not working, funny enough our best form of recreation is sitting and watching other people talk, act or compete in sports rather than doing so ourselves.

Our desire to live a life of comfort has gradually, unknown to us scrapped off the most ancient inherent ability in us. The most recent statistics of people who engage in any form of physical activity shows that...

In Scotland, 73 percent  of boys and 68 percent  of girls in the 2 to 15 years age group met the WHO's minimum time spent exercising.

In England, More than 25 percent  of boys in the South-East met the WHO recommendations, while only 13 percent  did so in the South West.
Also in England, more than two thirds of trips were done by car and 22 percent  were on foot

80 percent of adult Americans do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week, About 22 percent of surveyed adults said they met only the aerobic activity guidelines while 29 percent met only the muscle-strengthening components.

Among both girls and boys in England, 85 percent  participated in informal sports and exercise. − More than two thirds of boys and girls in England walk to school at least once a week. The proportion of children cycling to school remains low, with just 6 percent  of boys and 1 percent  of girls riding to school in 2012.

In the UK 44 percent  of adults never do any moderate physical activity. In the EU, adults in Netherlands has the lowest proportion with only 14 percent  moderately physically active. Malta and Cyprus has the highest with 70 percent.

13 percent  of UK adults are sedentary for longer than 8.5 hours a day. The EU average is 11 percent . Highest are the Netherlands and Denmark (25%). 12 months after completing a Cardio-respiratory (CR) programme by the health organisations, the proportion of patients never exercising drops from 55 percent  to 32 percent .

The proportion of patients achieving physical fitness health status increases from 39 percent  before completing the CR programmes, to 66 percent  12 months after.

A higher proportion of boys and girls were sedentary on weekend days than weekdays. In England, 43 percent  of boys and 37 percent  of girls aged 13 to 15 are sedentary for 6 hours or more on weekend days, the average number of sedentary hours on weekdays was highest amongst the group with the lowest household income for both boys and girls.

Over half of children’s total sedentary time in England was spent watching television, the only age group where less than half of total sedentary time was spent watching television was  13 to 15 year old boys. − In Scotland, boys spent an average of 2.2 hours sitting in front of a screen per weekday and 2.8 hours per weekend day, while girls spent an average of 2.1 hours per weekday and 2.6 hours per weekend day. Generally In Scotland, the total time spent sitting in front of a screen increased for both genders with age and was highest among 13 to 15 year olds.

How much education the adult received also impacted exercise rates. More than 27 percent of the exercising adults were college graduates, while only 12 percent of the population had received less than a high school diploma.

These results are not that thrilling by the way however i will not be surprised to find ourselves facing increased rates and epidemic of obesity, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and other preventable diseases.

ELEVEN BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

1     In a clear and concise manner, exercise medically is the most important activity to keep you healthy and free of  cancer and other silent killing diseases, it has both the prevention of disease and healing effects. Several studies have shown that being physically active reduces what the medical literature refers to as all-caused mortality (the likelihood of dying from anything).

One important study conducted by the aerobic center in Dallas, showed that men who were at the lowest level of cardio-respiratory fitness lowered their death rate by 44 percent by achieving only a moderate fitness level. This observation surpassed the change that would be expected from quitting smoking.

This simply explains that− it is better to smoke and exercise than smoking and not exercising or not smoking and not exercising.
Another fascinating study of over six thousand men by Stanford university researchers showed that lower peak exercise capacity was a better prediction of death than the other factors like smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes. The american heart association estimates that up to 250,000 deaths in the united states every year (roughly 12% of all death) can be attributed to a lack of regular exercise.

2      Coronary artery disease, a sickness that kills over 2,000 Americans daily can be prevented by adopting a healthy exercise practice throughout life. This disease is simply the obstruction of blood flow through the arteries that supplies blood to the heart causing angina or heart attack and possibly death. Those who are physically inactive (people with no exercise) doubles their odds of developing this disease, a risk comparable to that created by smoking, high blood pressure, or elevated cholesterol. So if you lack adequate exercise, your health is similar  to that of a chronic smoker or a hypertensive patient.

3      Regular exercise reduces the blood pressure to normal and improves the blend of cholesterol and triglycerides circulating in the bloodstream.

4       Regular exercise also tends to raise the level of HDL-cholesterol, a kind of cholesterol that is good for our health.

5       Physical activity (exercise) reduces the risk of getting diabetes. A convincing number of studies suggests that a person at a very high risk of developing diabetes can actually reduce the chances by 58 percent before three years if he/she follows these three straight forward measures:

  • maintaining moderate physical ability throughout the three years,
  • walking thirty minutes everyday and
  • losing 5 to 7 percent of his or her body weight.

Furthermore, for people who already have diabetes a healthy exercise can help delay or prevent the complications associated with disease such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney failure, blindness, foot damage, skin damage, hearing impairment, Alzheimer's disease, lower limb amputation.

6        Cancer of the colon (the large intestine) is the third most common type of cancer among both men and women in the US, killing over 55,000 people every year.
More than thirty published studies have pointed at exercise as one of the most effective tool not to get this cancer.
In addition, vigorous physical activity during the teen years and early adulthood may reduce a woman's chances of getting breast cancer later in life.
Other researches suggests that walking briskly at a pace of four miles per hour for one hour everyday can also help reduce the risk of getting breast cancer. As far as we know for now, exercise does not help in other forms of cancer apart from the two mentioned.

7        Osteoporosis- This sickness is simply the loss of bone tissues leading to thinning of bone and then fracture. This case is common among older men and women above menopause, studies are clear that if a younger person had a very physically active childhood and teen age he/she would develop dense bones, and if an adult starts exercising, he/she would maintain the bone density and prevents osteoporosis.
Over 1.5 million fractures happen every year in united states due to osteoporosis.

8         Regular exercise increases energy in the human body by enhancing blood flow to the capillaries and the brain forcing the lungs to absorb more oxygen.
Even people who are not energetic as a Tiger notice this invigorating surge of alertness after a good workout as if the brain has been swept clean of cobwebs thus productivity increases.
"An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day"
Henry David Thoreau

9          According to studies and their results exercise is directly associated with our moods hence a physically active person has a lesser chance of developing anxiety and depression. Hence the best way to deal with anxiety and depression is engaging in a healthy exercise.

10        Maintaining a good appearance is linked to a good exercise. Both endurance and muscle-strengthening exercises burn more calories than just sitting still or lying down. Therefore if you aim at loosing weight, start thinking of a physical activity you like and engage in it.

11        The family tie seeks for any slightest opportunity to strengthen itself you may not know when it happens but it just does, as long as there are interactions.
Aside from setting a positive example, parents who join their children in outdoor physical activities like walks, jogs, swims, bikes, rides, hikes, gymings etc are involuntarily knotting stronger the family tie. Activities in which the entire family participates can provide a wonderful opportunity to build some powerful memories, interact and share good times which is good for young families.

THE RISK OF A PHYSICALLY INACTIVE LIFESTYLE

The only way to state or summarize the risks of living with poor exercise is ultimately an untimely death. It is  very risky. It may not be the actual cause of any death but it would have gone a very long way to control, prevent and delay whatever could have caused a death be it heart attack, stroke, whatever.

If a person living a poor and physically inactive lifestyle dies at 80, studies and research has it that it could have stretched above 120 years if the person had adopted a more healthy physically active lifestyle.

According to Paul C. Reisser in his book Family Health, Nutrition, and Fitness (Complete Guides)
"Not everyone is motivated by warnings, and many of us have trouble making changes even when there is a clear evidence that our lifestyle is hurting or even killing us."
We all have this devil of pervasy and defiance in us but in different degrees anyway, it is inherent but we can control it. you can't just keep saying that your work schedule is too tight that you have no time to exercise your own body thats totally unacceptable remember whether you're there or not your office must still run (by another)...
